Owen almost joined Toffees
04 Jul 2009 - 11:30:00
Former Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has revealed that Everton came close to signing Michael Owen during the January transfer window.
Owen completed a shock free transfer move to Manchester United on Friday after allowing his contract with the Magpies to run down this summer.
The 29-year-old has agreed a two-year contract at Old Trafford, but it could have been a different story had the former Liverpool striker secured a move back to Merseyside in January.
"In the last window there was a chance of him going to Everton but that fell through and now he's going to an even bigger club," revealed Kinnear, who was in charge of the Magpies at the time.
Meanwhile, after a four-year spell at Newcastle which was interrupted by several injury problems, Kinnear believes United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is the ideal manager to help Owen resurrect his career.
He added: "He's a great pro, he's very dedicated, he's a really nice lad and I'm sure Alex will get the best out of him.
"He's right up there with the best of them.
"I like to think I played with one of the best strikers in the world in Jimmy Greaves and Michael has similar attributes."
