Osman eyes Euro spot

Everton midfielder Leon Osman is targeting European qualification again this season, despite big spending from their peers. Toffees boss David Moyes spent £17million in the summer but, despite being busy in the transfer market, Everton were heavily out-spent by their Europe-chasing rivals. Ambitious Manchester City spent a whopping £90m, Aston Villa spent £38m while Sunderland and Tottenham spent more than £30m each. All those sides ultimately want to break the top-four mould but a more realistic target is the Europa League, which Everton have entered two seasons in a row through finishing fifth in the Premier League. Osman said: "We like to do things quietly here, stay under the radar and keep chipping away at things. "Hopefully we can finish in a European slot again. "There are two or three clubs not in the top four last season who have been throwing cash around and they'll be expected to get European qualification, but we're the same. "We set our targets on European qualification as a minimum, but the great ambition for the club is to start winning silverware." Osman faces increased competition in the Everton side this year, with Anton Peterlin and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov among Moyes' midfield signings. With full-back Lucas Neill arriving on a free transfer, Everton Academy graduates Osman and defender Tony Hibbert have their places under threat this term, but the midfielder insists competition is healthy for the side. "Me and Hibbo are Evertonians and want what's best for the club," Osman told the Liverpool Echo. "We want the club to improve and the only way we're going to do that is through competition for places and by getting better players. "That's only going to make us play better too. We need to bring quality players in to make us work harder for our places. "Hopefully we'll play well enough and show enough to keep us in the team, but ultimately we want the team to improve."
