Such is the attitude towards referees at the moment that Alan Pardew may regard any questioning of Howard Webb's decision to rule out Leon Best's 78th-minute effort about as pointless as the game's outcome for his Newcastle team.[LNB]But it was a harsh decision. Best appeared to win the ball fairly in an aerial challenge with Phil Jagielka before planting it into the net. [LNB]Newcastle manager Pardew said: 'I thought Best was unlucky. Jagielka backed into him.'[LNB] Comeback complete: Phil Jagielka scored Everton's winner against Newcastle[LNB] [LNB] It would have produced a second goalfor the 24-year-old striker, who opened the scoring in the 23rd minutewhen he headed into an empty net at the far post after Tim Howardpalmed out a Kevin Nolan effort.[LNB]MATCH FACTSNEWCASTLE (4-4-2): Harper; S Taylor (Ferguson65min), Coloccini, Williamson, Jose Enrique(Ameobi 43); Simpson, Tiote, Nolan, Gutierrez;Lovenkrands, Best (Kuqi 85). [LNB]The midfielder ended a surging runby picking out Leon Osman, who had drifted intelligently into space onthe edge of the home area. The finish was clinical. The lesson was notlearned as Newcastle's slack marking led to their downfall five minuteslater.[LNB]Leighton Baines's low outswingingfree-kick evaded the line of home defenders and Jagielka raced in atthe far post to volley home.[LNB] [LNB] Under pressure: Newcastle's Coloccini (left) tries to keep hold of the ball against Everton[LNB]The loss of Jose Enrique fourminutes before the interval hardly helped Newcastle, which resulted ina positional reshuffle. Pardew blamed the defensive lapses for the loss.[LNB]'When we took the lead we lookedcomfortable. But we got caught twice and then it was going to be anuphill task, especially when Enrique got injured as well.[LNB]'You can't play a game at this level and lose the quality players we have.
