New Everton signing Sylvain Distin says Blue is the colour

THE talk was of him becoming a Red but, for Sylvain Distin, the only colour he wanted to be was Blue. Though Liverpool were linked persistently with the imposing French defender for much of this summer, and Aston Villa and Sunderland both made plays for his services, once David Moyes revealed Everton's hand, the race was over. Distin started his life on Merseyside yesterday after the formalities of his £5m from Portsmouth were completed and quickly realised that the choice he had made was going to be the right on. First day nerves are inevitable when you start any new job but such was the welcome Distin received from his new team-mates at Finch Farm, any anxieties he may have harboured were quickly and emphatically banished. Some Evertonians may still be smarting that Joleon Lescott has moved to pastures new but in signing Distin, David Moyes has brought a player of similar quality but with greater experience, a warrior who won't go missing if the going gets tough. Not that the 31-year-old expects any trouble at Everton; while Portsmouth are lurching towards the point of financial Armageddon, Distin is adamant his new club's star will continue to ascend regardless of a poor start to the new campaign. That's why he envisages the next three years in these parts to be some of the best of a career that has seen him play for Paris St Germain, Newcastle United and Manchester City and he can't wait for it to gets started. Clearly there are no regrets that Rafa Benitez never came calling. 'I heard about Liverpool's interest and I read about it but, from what I have been told, there was never anything more than that,' said Distin.
