    Moyes tips Lescott to shine

    11 Jul 2007 - 10:05:51

Everton boss David Moyes believes Joleon Lescott can go on to become one of the Toffees' all-time defensive greats after being handed the club's famous number five shirt.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a stand out first season at Goodison Park following his £3million move from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer and has been rewarded with the shirt worn previously by club legends and former skippers David Weir and Dave Watson.

"The second season in the Premier League can sometimes be difficult for players who have come up from the Championship but the signs are that Joleon is ready for it," said Moyes.

"He has been showing us in the past week that he has prepared properly and he's looked after himself.

"There's no real significance in him being given that shirt.

"Dave Watson and Davie Weir were tremendous players for Everton and if Joleon can match their achievements, we will have a tremendous player on our hands."

Lescott made 42 appearances last season and earned a call up to the England 'B' squad for the match against Albania in May.
