Moyes sets sights on fifth
04 May 2009 - 10:34:46
Everton manager David Moyes believes fifth place in the Premier League table is now within his side's reach following Sunday's 2-0 victory at Sunderland.
Moyes was delighted with the focus of his players as they leapfrogged Aston Villa to move into fifth place despite the prospect of an FA Cup Final appearance against Chelsea being on the horizon.
Second-half goals from Steven Pienaar and Marouane Fellaini secured a first league victory in five games for the Merseysiders.
"The big game at the end of month is undoubtedly on the players' mind but they got a result today and we've given ourselves a real chance of making fifth," said Moyes.
"We're trying to keep focused on the Premier League but it's very difficult when you have a Final coming up against Chelsea not to be thinking about it in some way.
"I thought in the first half we didn't play as well as I'd have liked us to. I think we had one or two chances and didn't take them. We were a little bit slow and we never really got to the level I wanted.
"I thought after half time we came out and started much brighter. We were a bit more crisp and more into the game and got ourselves a good goal."
