Everton manager David Moyes admitted Saturday's 1-0 victory over Reading at Goodison Park had been "plain ugly".
The Toffees consolidated fourth place in the table and strengthened their grip on the final Championship League qualifying spot after Phil Jagielka headed home the winner midway through the second half.
"It was a plain ugly win, but there were times that we played well," admitted a relieved Moyes.
"I told the lads they had to do better, but on a very difficult pitch we got the result we needed. But give credit to Reading, they did well and could have got something.
"But I think we deserved the result even if we did not play as well as we could have done."
Meanwhile, Moyes refused to confirm whether Ayegbeni Yakubu would be reinstated to the squad for Thursday's UEFA Cup trip to Norway to take on Brann.
The Nigeria striker was dropped and fined after returning late from Africa Cup of Nations duty.
"I have not made my mind up about Yakubu yet, whether he goes to Norway. I have not decided on that yet," Moyes added.
