Everton's hopes of signing Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito have improved after Genoa pulled out of the race to sign the 29-year-old.
The Argentina international is expected to leave the Spanish club this season after their relegation from La Liga last term.
Toffees boss David Moyes has been linked with the prolific forward for several weeks as he continues to look for ways to improve his strikeforce.
He could be without Andy Johnson next season as the former Crystal Palace and Birmingham star continues to be linked with a move away from Goodison Park.
Genoa president Enrico Preziosi said: "I know that it would be a dream for all Genoa fans that Diego Milito returns to the club.
"But that dream is impossible for several reasons, mainly that Milito has a contract that is beyond the parameters that this club can offer."
Meanwhile, Everton continue to be linked with Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic as they continue their search for an understudy to Tim Howard.
Turkey international Mehmet Topal is also being linked with a move to Merseyside as a replacement for Lee Carsley.
