Everton boss David Moyes was full of praise for his players who 'battered' Fiorentina but exited the UEFA Cup on penalties.
The Toffees overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit through goals from Andrew Johnson and Mikel Arteta to take the round of 16 tie into extra-time.
However, penalty misses from Ayegbeni Yakubu and Phil Jagielka ended Everton's European dream in heartbreaking fashion.
"I am disappointed we have not made it through, but it was some effort - we battered them," said Moyes.
"The players deserve great credit. We put in a hard shift but got no reward and that is hard to take.
"We played some good stuff and they are a good side. We didn't play well over there, but we made up for it tonight.
"We had enough chances to win the tie and we probably should have done.
"Their goalkeeper got lucky a couple of times and made some good saves."
