Everton hope to be able to call on the services of Brazilian midfielder Anderson da Silva in the next few weeks.
David Moyes had hoped to complete the signing in the summer but complications regarding the player's passport meant the deal never went through.
However, it is now believed that a revised deal is close to being sealed.
Chairman Bill Kenwright said: "Anderson da Silva is a Brazilian who came over here to spend some time with David Moyes and he impressed him.
"We bought his federative and economic rights but couldn't secure his player registration because he didn't have a British passport.
"He was supposed to have a passport by the January window, and then by May. By June we were getting fed up, not by the player but by the people around him promising the passport would be ready.
"We believe he eventually got a passport as he has been able to play in Spain this season. We are talking to his agent at the moment and there is a possibility he could be joining us in the next few weeks."
