Moyes admits AJ mistake
21 Sep 2007 - 07:38:02
Everton boss David Moyes has admitted allowing Andrew Johnson to take a second penalty after missing the first against Metalist Kharkiv was a bad decision.
The England striker missed a re-taken penalty in the 71st minute of the 1-1 UEFA Cup draw at Goodison Park, before blazing a late second spot-kick over the crossbar.
The result leaves the Toffees needing to secure a positive result in Ukraine in two weeks time, but Moyes refused to blame his profligate striker.
"I am sure Andy wanted to correct the first penalty," he said.
"Of the players on the field, Andy was the designated penalty kick taker and it looked to me that he was keen to correct his mistake from the first miss so you have to applaud him for doing that.
"But in the end, in hindsight it looks a bad decision."
Everton had led through an early Joleon Lescott header but substitute Venans Zeze grabbed a priceless away-goal equaliser for Metalist, who had two men sent off in an action-packed first round tie.
"As for the second leg, we will have to go there and play a lot better," added Moyes.
"At the moment we are out because of their away goal. It is up to us to make sure we do much better out there."
