Everton boss David Moyes does not expect to be able to make any major signings during next month's transfer window.
Moyes kickstarted an outstanding 2012 for the club by bringing in Nikica Jelavic, Darron Gibson and Steven Pienaar during the corresponding window last season. But that was a rare opportunity for Moyes to spend after being constrained by tight budgets in previous years and the situation is likely to revert to the recent norm this time.
Moyes told BBC Radio Five Live: "Last year we sold (Diniyar) Bilyaletdinov for £5.5million back to Russia and that gave us the opportunity to go and buy. We brought in Steven Pienaar on loan from Spurs, we bought Jelavic from Rangers for £5million and Darron Gibson from Man Utd for £500,000."
He added: "We spent the money we got in - that is the way we have tended to work. My intention is not to sell anyone this January. Because of that what I'll be hoping to do is pick up a couple of loan players or maybe a 'Bosman' if there is anything out there, although at this time of year you rarely get anything of the right quality."
Earlier in the day, Moyes was dismissive of fresh speculation concerning the future of left-back Leighton Baines. A new report has claimed this weekend's opponents Chelsea are now interested in the England international but Moyes said he had not read the report and that is should not be believed.
Chelsea's visit to Goodison Park in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday will see Moyes renew his rivalry with former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez. Benitez, now interim manager at Stamford Bridge, is likely to receive a hostile reception from home fans who will not have forgotten one notorious taunt in 2007.
The Spaniard referred to Everton as one of the Premier League's "smaller teams" after they held Liverpool to a frustrating goalless draw at Anfield. Overall, Moyes clashed 14 times with Benitez during the latter's six-year spell with the Reds. Everton only managed to win three of those games, all at Goodison.
Moyes said: "It was always tough because Liverpool had a great team. It was always hard to get the better of them. They had a tremendous team, and still have.
"I think he (Benitez) always wanted to be in the Premier League. I think he enjoyed his stint here.
"I think, like a lot of people who come to this country, he enjoyed the honesty and the way the Premier League is played. I think he has bided his time to get another job."
