Moyes: Debt becoming unfashionable

Everton boss David Moyes has refused to comment on Liverpool's off-field problems but believes clubs must get their financial houses in order.[LNB] The build-up to Sunday's 214th Merseyside derby at Goodison Park has been completely overshadowed by the Liverpool takeover saga.[LNB]At the heart of the protracted issue has been a crippling debt, thought to be of around £240million.[LNB]Liverpool are one of the highest-profile casualties of the financial problems that have gripped the game in recent years and Moyes feels clubs must learn to live within their means.[LNB]When asked about the Liverpool situation at his regular media briefing today, Moyes said: "It is none of my business - I have got a big enough job to do at Everton, never mind concentrating on Liverpool.[LNB]"It has always been hard to compete with Liverpool. People quite often say Everton don't win enough games against Liverpool - which I am the first to support - but there are other circumstances to back that up and it tends to be finances.[LNB]"If you look at our debt, it is probably roughly somewhere between £60million and £70million. I think it is well documented what Liverpool's debt is.[LNB]"I think debt is maybe going to become quite unfashionable. If you are in debt it is not going to be that trendy.[LNB]"I think the media have pushed people to spend a lot of money and I think that is now changing."[LNB]When asked if that was a good thing, he added: "Yes, I think so."[LNB]Whatever the issues surrounding the game, Moyes does not believe they will have much of an impact on the action on the pitch.[LNB]There is already enough tension in the air due to the poor starts made by both clubs in the Premier League.[LNB]Liverpool are 18th in the table with just six points while the Toffees are above them only on goal difference.[LNB]Results elsewhere on Saturday could even put both sides in the relegation zone come kick-off.[LNB]But Moyes said: "What other matters have the players had to concern themselves with? I think you just get on with the game.[LNB]"Football players are professional, you go onto the pitch and it is 11 v 11.[LNB]"I have been surprised by Liverpool's results because they are a good side.[LNB]"But I don't think anyone would expect Liverpool to be in this position come the end of the season, just like I don't think anyone expects Everton to be in this position.[LNB]"We are because we have not played well enough and not won the opening games. We have to try to do better."[LNB]Everton at least go into the game on the back of a victory having finally won, at the seventh time of asking, against Birmingham in their last outing.[LNB]Moyes said: "The players played well. They had been playing well in the other games and we hadn't quite got the victories so that one was pleasing, although it took an own goal to get us on our way.[LNB]"But let's not kid ourselves - we have had one win. We are nowhere near where we want to be.[LNB]"There was no singing and dancing after we beat Birmingham. We've won and we move on."[LNB]Everton's major worries concern injuries with Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jagielka both joining Steven Pienaar and Louis Saha on the casualty list while on international duty this week.[LNB]Midfielder Fellaini is the biggest blow as the hamstring injury he suffered playing in Belgium's Euro 2012 qualifier against Austria will keep him out for up to six weeks.[LNB]Moyes said: "I watched him play for Belgium in midweek and he was the outstanding player on the field.[LNB]"Unfortunately he got a hamstring injury and was made to play on longer than he should have. I think that has only made his injury worse."[LNB]Jagielka, who sent home after breaking down in training with England, is not as serious but still a major doubt for the derby.[LNB]Moyes added: "At the moment I would say he is not going to be involved because it is a hamstring injury.[LNB]"He is not as bad as we first thought, but whether it comes too quick for him - that is the way it is looking at this present time.[LNB]"England lost three players to muscle injuries - you would maybe have to question that is too many."
