McGeady interest heightens but Everton boss playing it cool

Aiden McGeady has emerged as a transfer target for Everton, according to ESPN’s Premier League website.

The Spartak Moscow winger joined the Russian club in 2011 from Celtic, but is thought to fancy a move back to Britain.

“When I am with the Ireland squad sometimes I look at the guys who are playing in England and feel a bit jealous,” McGeady was quoted as saying in The Guardian earlier this week.

“I feel I could be in the back of people’s minds now, that I could be forgotten about. People ask me: ‘Where are you playing now? Oh, are you still there?’

“I have made no secret of the fact that one day I would like to play in England. I would be disappointed if I never get the chance to do that.

“I didn’t think I would be here this long, I didn’t see myself being here longer than a couple of years. But no footballer really looks four or five years ahead.”

He is reported to have rejected a contract offer from Spartak, thus alerting those keeping tabs on him in England, including Aston Villa and Fulham.

Everton is arguably the most appealing destination for McGeady, with the club flying high in the Premier League and playing attractive attacking football under new boss Roberto Martinez.

The Everton manager is aware of McGeady’s situation and, with the Ireland international’s current deal set to expire next summer, Spartak may be forced to cash-in in January.

However, the Spaniard is keen to play his cards close to his chest when discussing transfer deals outside the window.

“I would never talk about players who are registered with other clubs, out of respect,” he told ESPN.

“I’m not going to start now. We’ve still got a few weeks before we start talking about those rumours.

“But as a football club, we will always keep an eye on any potential targets. Our fans will be the first ones to know when there’s anything to announce.”

The 27-year-old would add to the already strong Irish contingent on Merseyside, a group that contains McGeady’s international team-mates Darron Gibson, Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy.
