McCarthy to Everton, but at what price?

Rumors are that Martinez is about to raid his former team, Wigan, once more in the hope of bagging James McCarthy for £15m. I’m sure many Everton fans would welcome this move, with McCarthy clearly showing superb promise as a player, and at only 22 years old would be at the club for a number of years.

However maybe they should be looking over their shoulders. It’s no secret that £15m for a club like Everton is no small change, it is a large sum. So where is this money coming from?

Well many would look straight at Leighton Baines and Manchester United’s continued interest in the England Left Back. However it seems very unlikely that Martinez would reinvest that money in a midfielder and not boost the same position, even with Bryan Oviedo in the line-up.

It is more likely that if the money that Everton are planning to use comes from the sale of a player, the player that is about to exit Goodison Park would be Marouane Fellaini. Perhaps this is the case, with United’s moves for Cesc Fabregas continually falling on death ears at the Nou Camp, maybe Moyes has shifted his gaze elsewhere, looking now at his precious former player.

It would be a surprise if McCarthy signs for Everton without a player leaving the club, but who knows, maybe Bill Kenwright and the board feel they need to back their new manager in his first transfer window. Regardless of whether this is the case or not, it does appear that the transfer activity for Everton isn’t over yet. Only time will tell as to whether that is a good or bad thing for their fans.
