Long-term deal for Rodwell

Everton teenager Jack Rodwell has been rewarded for breaking into the first-team squad by being offered a five-year contract.

The 17-year-old, who scored in Sunday's FA Cup fifth round victory against Aston Villa, is expected to pen the new deal before this weekend's Premier League trip to Newcastle United.

Rodwell made his first-team debut for the club in last season's UEFA Cup victory at AZ Alkmaar and has gone on to make 15 more appearances for the Toffees.

The former academy star said after scoring on Sunday: "Just to play for Everton is an honour but, to get the goal, I'm made up.

"I've had other chances and I'm glad it's out of the way, hopefully there's more to come.

"My ambitions are just to keep working hard and, when I do get on, to make an impression."
