Johnson role surprised Moyes
17 Nov 2006 - 16:43:33
Everton manager David Moyes has admitted his surprise that striker Andrew Johnson was used in an unfamiliar role when England played Holland in midweek.
Johnson, who has netted six times for the Toffees this season, was employed on the right side of a three-man frontline as England were held to a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam.
"You could ask Andy to play right-back or wide left or wide right, he will do it to the best of his ability and that's all you can ask of any player," said Moyes.
"We all wanted to see Andy play through the middle and that's where he thought he was going to play.
"We would rather see him coming from the middle and running wide, it is very difficult to run anywhere when you are already out on the right.
"It is through the middle where he causes problems and, had he been given the chance to take passes slipped through to him from Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney or Frank Lampard, Andy would have done better than he did."
