It's top secret! Wales hero Ian Rush

26 March 2011 01:21
Liverpool legend and former Leeds, Juventus, Newcastle and Wales striker Ian Rush spills the beans on winning Doubles, the delights of Malaysia and singing Poor Scouser Tommy (badly)...[LNB] Glory days: Ian Rush at Liverpool[LNB]Who is your sporting hero ?[LNB]I supported Everton when I was young so it was Bob Latchford, but my all-time heroes are Pele and Bjorn Borg. [LNB]What would you be if you weren't a sportsman? [LNB]It would definitely have been something outdoors. Maybe a PE teacher. [LNB]Which other sportsman would you like to be? [LNB]Roger Federer. He's the best tennis player I've ever seen. [LNB]Career highlight? [LNB]Winning the 1986 FA Cup final. Liverpool won the League the week before and I'd dreamed about scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final as a kid - and to do that, against Everton and to win the Double, it was just everything rolled into one. [LNB]... and the worst moment? [LNB]Wales not qualifying for a major tournament is my biggest regret, particularly when we didn't do it against Romania (losing 2-1 in November 1993) and didn't go to the USA World Cup. [LNB] Dream come true: Rush celebrates scoring in the 1986 FA Cup final[LNB]If your house was burning down, what one possession would you save?[LNB] If my family - my wife and two boys, who are 21 and 18 - weren't in there, it would be my trophy cabinet. [LNB]What's the best advice you've ever been given?[LNB] My dad always told me: 'Be confident and believe in what you can do.' You need the confidence to go out there and do it.[LNB] Favourite karaoke song?[LNB]The only one I've done is a Liverpool song, Poor Scouser Tommy. I don't even try to sing You'll Never Walk Alone. I'm Welsh but I'm not the best singer. [LNB]Three most-listened to songs on your ipod? [LNB]I like the Stereophonics. I know the lead singer, Kelly Jones, and there's the Welsh connection. [LNB]Last film you saw?[LNB] The King's Speech. I get to travel a lot now so I watch films on planes.[LNB] Last book you read?[LNB] Kenny Dalglish's autobiography. My favourite is Richard Branson's Losing My Virginity. It gives you inspiration.[LNB] Friend and fan: Rush's last big read was of Dalglish's (right) autobiography[LNB]Favourite Pre-match meal? [LNB]Chicken and pasta. [LNB]Can you cook? Best dish? [LNB]The only thing I can cook is Welsh rarebit. [LNB]Favourite holiday destination? [LNB]I've got a place in Portugal, which I like very much, but I've just been working in Malaysia for five weeks. My family had a chance to come over and we really loved it, particularly the island of Pangkor. [LNB]In a film of your life, who would you like to play you? [LNB]Dustin Hoffman. We're the same age. [LNB]What's the most expensive thing you've ever bought? [LNB]I had a black Porsche when I was a player (a red one would be too obvious!).[LNB] Tell us a secret...[LNB] I was so shy when I was younger. When I first went to Liverpool I didn't say a word for a year. [LNB]Ian Rush was talking at the launch of the new Hyundai 'Boot Shoot' App available from i-Tunes.
