Injury despair for Jagielka
26 Apr 2009 - 12:07:09
Everton defender Phil Jagielka will miss next month's FA Cup Final against Chelsea after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in Saturday's home defeat to Manchester City.
The former Sheffield United star, who has been one of Everton's best performers this season and scored the winning penalty in last weekend's semi-final win against Manchester United, faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Everton physio Mick Rathbone confirmed to the club's official website: "The scan has unfortunately confirmed what we already feared and that is that Phil will be out for the rest of the season.
"He's ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery in around ten days' time when the swelling has gone down.
"It's too early to estimate a return to action for the player."
Meanwhile, Toffees boss David Moyes was disappointed with his side's display in the 2-1 defeat, saying: "I thought if we'd got the goal earlier it would have changed things.
"I was anxious to try and get a goal and, at the start of the second half, we looked like we were getting closer to it.
"But they got the second goal and we went down to ten men, so it was always going to be hard."
