Ian Snodin: Leon Osman thoroughly deserves his call-up to the England squad
The timing of Leon Osman’s England call-up might have surprised me, but nothing else.
I’ve been championing Ossie’s international claims for many years now – and while I’ve long believed he had the quality to play for his country, I thought, like his manager David Moyes, that his chance had probably gone. But he’s finally been given a richly deserved opportunity. I’m made up for him, and what’s even more pleasing is that he was named in the squad prior to the usual raft of cry-offs due to injury – so people can’t say that’s the only reason Roy Hodgson was forced into having a look at him.
Ossie’s technique, his attitude, his eye for a pass and a goal, plus his character have all advertised his international potential. Now it’s finally been recognised by an England manager. It’s a strange feeling when international week comes around and you’re one of the few players left behind when all your squad mates jet off to play for their countries.
It’s something Leon’s had to put up with in the past, but not this week and hopefully not in the future either. If he gets a chance tomorrow in Sweden and performs well, who’s to say that he’s not going to be around in future squads, too?
