HATCHET MAN: Maybe when Bruce leaves Sunderland they'll get a big name boss and he'll get a big club

When Niall Quinn claims that Steve Bruce is the perfect fit for Sunderland it is clear that the Ellis Short era at the club may not be quite what fans are expecting. The American owner is supposedly ready to splash the cash and there is talk of the Black Cats competing with Everton and Aston Villa in the second rung of Premier League clubs. Yet Quinn is a Geordie who was thought to hanker after the Newcastle and Manchester United jobs and has regularly used smaller clubs as stepping stones. The Sunderland post is his seventh in management in 11 years and his record overall shows he wins on average only a third of matches. Bruce may have taken Birmingham into the Premier League but he also took them out of it again and staying up has been his main objective in the top flight. Sunderland have given the impression they are aiming higher than that and would get a 'big name' manager. Maybe when Bruce leaves they will .
