Everton's Jose Baxter released on bail in drugs probe

Baxter, 17, from Bootle, was arrested in the Kirkby area of Liverpool yesterday [Monday] with two other men, aged 29 and 34 when police stopped the car they were travelling in. A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "Three men were arrested in Kirkby on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply and possession of counterfeit money. "All three men have been released on police bail pending further inquiries." Baxter became Everton’s youngest ever player when he made his debut on the first day of last season at the age of 16 and 191 days. He is widely regarded as the most promising player to emerge from the club’s youth system since Wayne Rooney, and was an unused substitute for Everton’s FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea in May. Everton have thus far failed to make any comment on the story, but Baxter’s mother, Mary Jane, is reported to have insisted that her son has done nothing wrong.
