Everton poised to sign Lucas Neill

Neill, the former West Ham captain, is a free agent after failing to agree an extension to his £80,000-a-week contract at Upton Park in the summer. The 31 year-old has also been linked with Atletico Madrid and Sunderland, but he now seems poised to accept a deal worth £40,000 a week. Moyes needs defensive reinforcements as new John Heitinga could be moved into central midfield following the loss of Phil Neville to a serious knee injury. A tackle from Fulham’s Dickson Etuhu left Neville with a deep gash in his left knee at Craven Cottage and, though he left the ground on crutches to travel back to Merseyside with his team-mates, an MRI scan has confirmed damage to his posterior ligament. Everton’s head physiotherapist, Mick Rathbone, admitted on Monday that the club would need to wait until the swelling on the injury had diminished before deciding whether Neville would require surgery. “An MRI scan has revealed that Phil has damaged ligaments at the back of his knee,” he said. “He will now rest it for 48 hours to allow the swelling to go down and he will then see a specialist in London before a decision is made on how best to manage the injury. I fear he is certainly facing a lengthy lay-off.”
