Everton FC youth player hurt in motorway crash on way to Finch Farm
A young Everton FC player was taken to hospital after being involved in a motorway crash.
Tom Molyneux, 18, was on his way to the club’s training ground Finch Farm when he was in the collision on the M57. No other cars were involved and the player escaped with what were described as “minor injuries”. But the car was said to be a “write-off”. Luckily an Everton academy coach who was on his way to Finch Farm on Saturday saw the crash and pulled over to help. Everton legend Duncan Ferguson, 40, who was also making his way to the training ground stopped at the scene.
The ECHO understands the star, known affectionately to Everton fans as “Big Dunc” stopped to see if he could do anything before leaving. It is believed the coach stayed with the teenager while the ambulance arrived and went to hospital with him. The young player, who had minor injuries including a graze to his head, was discharged later that day at around lunchtime. Today an Everton FC spokesman confirmed one of their under 18 players was involved in a crash and said the entire club was wishing him a speedy recovery. He said:
“The club confirms that one of our under 18 players was involved in an accident on Saturday morning which did not involve any other vehicle. He sustained minor injuries and was discharged from hospital on Saturday lunchtime.” He added:
“Tom is a great lad and we obviously wish him a speedy recovery and everyone at the club sends their best wishes to him.”
It is not thought that Tom’s injuries will affect his game long-term. His recovery is being monitored by the club. Ormskirk-born Tom had been on his way to Finch Farm to report for a game. The youth side was playing away at Blackburn Rovers that day. The under 18s went on to win 3-2, marking another success for the club whose first team romped to victory, winning 2-1 against Sunderland on Saturday. Promising midfielder, Tom, joined Everton when he was just 12-years-old.
