Everton FC's Seamus Coleman says his goal at Cheltenham was his best ever
Seamus Coleman was still celebrating the best goal he’d ever scored today – despite wind-ups from his team-mates in the wake of Monday’s spectacular FA Cup strike!
Everton boasted five different goalscorers in the 5-1 defeat of Cheltenham Town, including both full-backs, but Coleman’s beautifully converted 57th-minute effort was the pick of the bunch.
Despite his classily converted right-foot finish, the young Irishman still had to endure some well meaning banter from his team-mates. After the match Sylvain Distin jokingly tweeted:
“What a lovely cross from @seamiecoleman23 lol. But he’s gonna try to make us believe he meant to score... As if lad lol!” But Coleman smiled:
“I think that’s the best goal I’ve ever scored.
“I don’t score too many, it’s been a while since my last one. It had been playing on my mind and just before the game Shane Duffy said ‘you are going to score’ and he was right, thankfully!
“I just passed to Victor (Anichebe) and made the inside run, he picked me out and I had to concentrate on getting my touch right. It sat up and I could just flip it over the keeper.”
Coleman was back in the Blues starting line-up for the first time since the draw at Stoke on December 15. A knee problem has sidelined him since then and kept him out of the four festive fixtures, just as he was looking to celebrate signing a new long term contract at the club.
“I was glad to get back. I’ve only missed 13 days but because there have been so many games in a short period of time I feel like I have been out for longer,” added Coleman.
“I was glad to get back on the pitch and I feel good now.
“It was never going to be easy coming here, there’s always a Cup upset but we were ready for it and you could see from the team the manager put out that we weren’t taking anything for granted.
“We are ready for Swansea now, it will be another difficult game but are playing well and we will look for another three points on Saturday.”
Costa Rican international Bryan Oviedo will be hoping to be involved again against The Swans, after enjoying only his third start at Cheltenham.
“It was important for me,” said Oviedo.
“I want to play, I want to have minutes on the pitch and I am happy about that. I work in training for this.
“I like both positions, I think on the left wing I can play more attacking but I also like to play left-back. Whichever position I try to play well as that is my job for the team.”
Oviedo made his Blues debut against Swansea back in September, the visitors to Goodison this weekend. He added:
“We need to win, it is a very good game and to get the three points will be important. We need to be even better this year and try to be in the top four teams in the Premier League.”
