Everton v Wigan live!

05 April 2009 14:10
87 Everton have a chance for a fifth but Jo dawdles on the ball and the move peters out. 85 A word for Lescott and Jagielka who have been rock solid at the back. 83 Wigan work the ball well high up the field but Melchiot's attempted shot is deflected and Howard claims in the air. 79 Saha appears to be moving okay after Bramble's challenge. A fifth could be in the offing here, with Everton passing the ball around very smartly. 76 Saha is down in pain after Bramble catches him late. 74 Rodallega goes close for Wigan. He hits at goal on the turn and his shot flashes just wide. Meanwhile, Wigan's De Ridder is on for Valencia, and for Everton, Gosling and Saha come on for Fellaini and Cahill. 71 Everton counter and Osman looks to wind up and fire home, but a great last-ditch challenge from Scharner breaks up the play. 69 This isn't a contest anymore. Watson is full of endeavour for Wigan, but it is to little avail. 65 Tim Cahill is replaced by youngster Jack Rodwell. Fellaini tries his luck with a long-range effort. It is rather hopeful but Kirkland makes a poor error with a weak parry. Osman duly taps home the rebound. 61 GOAL - Osman scores for Everton!!! 60 Mido keeps a high ball alive and Watson has a chance to test Howard. The midfielder gets plenty of power behind the ball, but fails to hit the target. 58 It almost feels like a game being played in May. The sun is out and the competitive element has been completely sucked out of the affair. 55 Wigan look powerless to avoid defeat here. They have offered very little. Surely it is all over now. Fellaini has too much space in the box and shoots low. Kirkland can only parry and Jo taps home the rebound. 51 GOAL - Jo scores for Everton!!! 49 Everton really look in the mood. Fellaini goes close again with a header. Wigan are struggling. Hibbert bends in a low cross and Fellaini turns the ball home first-time. Impressive finish from the Belgian. He had little to aim at and was under pressure. Game over for Wigan? 47 GOAL - Fellaini scores for Everton!!! 47 It's a 4-4-2 now for Wigan as Bruce looks for a better 45 minutes. Everton have begun brightly though. 46 Everton get the second period under way. Brown is to be replaced by Rodallega. The midfielder was likely to be sent off, I feel. So a decent decision by Bruce. Paul Gibney, though, is predicting a second-half turnaround with Mido bagging two goals for Wigan. James Antoniou is predicting Everton to begin the second half in frightening fashion and "crush" their opponents 4/5-0. A very comfortable half for the home side. Jo's goal was the only real moment of class. Wigan must improve if they are to stand any chance of getting something out of this game. It is james.dall@bskyb.com to get in touch. Half-time. Everton 1 Wigan 0. 45+2 Watson whips in a decent free-kick and Howard again looks dodgy, as he is forced to palm wide for a corner. Boyce meets the corner but Howard can gather easily this time. 45 Two minutes of added time will be played. 42 Mido is cutting a lone figure up front for Wigan. He needs more support if the Latics are going to work their way back into this game. 39 Pienaar drops into space and winds up for a long-range shot. He rather drags the effort though, and the ball shoots wide. 36 There's plenty of strong challenges going on. Many players are nursing knocks. Most of it is fair though, Brown's raking tackle earlier aside. 33 Osman is looking very sharp indeed. Again he causes problems, this time drawing a foul from N'Zogbia. 31 Wigan pump a free-kick into the box and the ball runs out of play after Howard had unconvincingly come running out of his goal. 30 Brown goes into the book for a late nibble at Cahill. A yellow has been forthcoming since the off. Osman feeds on-loan striker Jo after Fellaini had won a high ball. The Brazilian takes one touch to get the ball out of his feet before firing left-footed across goal into the bottom corner. Fine finish. 27 GOAL - Jo scores for Everton!!! 26 Moyes and Bruce are prowling their permitted areas barking orders. Hardly a classic, so far. 24 Neville has been bright for the Toffees, scurrying around and breaking up play. Osman has looked sharp too. Wigan, meanwhile, have retained their shape well. As I type, Melchiot is booked for a pull on Pienaar. A little harsh, maybe. 21 Little to report of late. Quality is lacking. Neither side's passing has stuck in the last few minutes. 19 Jo tries his luck with a low shot from a tight angle. He should really have looked to the back post, where Cahill was lurking. 18 Best chance of the game so far falls to Scharner. Valencia darts down the right and hangs up a cross to the far post. Scharner rises and nods at goal but it drops just over the top corner. 16 Bit better from Wigan, as they enjoy a little more possession. But still they are lacking penetration. 14 Very close to a real opportunity for Everton. They work it well and Osman drives forward but the Wigan defence crowd him out. 13 Hibbert drops in a high cross from the right and the fans await Fellaini's contact. The Belgian nods downwards at goal but it is straight at Kirkland. 11 Mido tries his luck from some distance after a couple of silky flicks from Wigan. Howard saw it all the way, but a decent effort, nonetheless. 9 The home side are in control at present. They are turning the screw, looking for an opening. 8 Osman is presented with the first half-chance on goal. Fellaini causes problems during a high ball and Osman flashes the loose ball well wide. 6 Fellaini is playing in a very advanced role again. No doubt Everton will look to use his and Jo's aerial prowess today. 5 A word for Scharner's new hairdo: novel. 4 Bit of a flat atmosphere so far, if truth be told. Hopefully things will begin to heat up once we get some action. 2 Hibbert receives hearty applause after excellent tracking back to dispossess Brown. 1 Valencia is penalised early on for a poor challenge on Pienaar. 1 Wigan get the game under way, kicking from right to left as I see it. The teams make their way out onto the Goodison Park turf. And some blurb on the team news: "Tim Cahill returns to the Everton side as Louis Saha is relegated to the substitutes' bench. Cahill was ruled out of the defeat by Portsmouth with a calf injury last time out and has only just returned from playing for Australia in midweek, but manager David Moyes considered the club's top scorer sufficiently recovered from the journey to feature. Full-back Tony Hibbert replaces Lars Jacobsen in the Toffees' defence after missing four matches with a groin injury. The Latics, chasing seventh spot and European qualification, have Antonio Valencia back from injury, at the expense of Hugo Rodallega. The lowdown from the people at Sky Bet: "A low scoreline has been predicted and a 1-0 victory to the Toffees is 9/2. In the goalscorer markets, Tim Cahill is 6/1 to score first and Mido is 8/1 to open the scoring for Wigan." Just 10 minutes to kick-off on Merseyside. The atmosphere is building nicely. Fingers crossed for a blinder of a fixture. George Downing ponders if today's game is likely to be a low-scoring affair. As a neutral, I certainly hope not. 6-6 would suffice. Andy McGrail, meanwhile, says 1-1, with Titus Bramble continuing his impressive form at the back. And David Mudd hails both managers, with Europe a realistic target for each side. Liam Wilton feels the Toffees will triumph 4-0 today, inspired by Tim Cahill. Marlon Wilson also feels Everton will vanquish their opponents, backing Fellaini and Cahill to bag. What say you, Latics fans? A word on today's betting odds from the kind people at Sky Bet. A home victory comes in at 8/11, 5/2 for a draw and it is fours for an away success.
