Everton v West Ham preview

15 May 2009 11:45
Everton will be looking to continue their charge for fifth place with a home win over European hopefuls West Ham. The Toffees sit one point behind current fifth placed occupants Aston Villa with two games remaining. Manager David Moyes has recently expressed his dissatisfaction with his side's performances ever since they beat Manchester United on penalties to book their place in the FA Cup final. The Merseyside outfit have won just once in four Premier League games since their semi-final showdown and Moyes is looking for an improvement starting with the Hammers. The hosts will be comforted by the fact that they have lost just once against West Ham at Goodison Park in 12 attempts but Gianfranco Zola's side will present a tough obstacle to overcome. The Italian has his side playing some eye-catchingly attractive football and the club hope to reap the rewards at the end of the season. The Londoners have Europe on their minds with the club just two points behind Fulham in seventh and that all-important last continental spot. However, not too dissimilar to the Toffees, the Hammers have seen their form dip in recent weeks with just two wins in their last eight league games. Team newsEverton will be without Mikel Arteta (knee), Phil Jagielka (knee), Victor Anichebe (knee), Tony Hibbert (neck), Nuno Valente (knee) and Yakubu (Achilles) for the clash. Only defender Hibbert has a chance of returning before the end of the season as Moyes looks to make do with what he has. One plus for the Toffees boss is the fact that striker Louis Saha has put together a string of consecutive outings after a season that has been tarnished by injury. The Frenchman scored twice in the reverse fixture at Upton Park in November as Everton ran out 3-1 winners and with his last strike coming in March the 30-year-old is due a goal. Meanwhile, Zola could welcome back top-scorer Carlton Cole to his starting line-up after missing the last eight games with a groin injury picked up on international duty with England. Midfielder Jack Collison is in contention for a start after coming off the bench in the club's last two games following an absence with a dislocated knee. Record buy Savio is also back in the frame after illness prevented him from playing against Liverpool last week. The Hammers boss has also been buoyed by the news that defender Danny Gabbidon could return to full training next week having not played since a League Cup clash with Everton back in December 2007 due to a succession of injuries. Midfielder Scott Parker (groin) James Collins (calf) Valon Behrami (knee) and Kieron Dyer (muscle strain) are all out. Possible starting XIsEverton: Howard, Lescott, Yobo, Baines, Neville, Pienaar, Cahill, Fellaini, Osman, Saha, Jo. West Ham: Green, Neill, Upson, Tomkins, Ilunga, Kovac, Noble, Stanislas, Collison, Cole, Tristan.
