Everton v Boro live!

08 March 2009 15:07
90+2 Everton win a corner which O'Neil felt he prevented. The hosts take it short in a bid to waste a few seconds. 90+1 O'Neil hits a long-range free kick which swerves and almost catches Howard out. He fails to gather but Emnes can't force in the rebound. Everton hearts were in mouths there! 90 There will be four added minutes. 90 Dan Gosling comes on for Pienaar, who appears to have picked up a knock. 89 Another chance for the hosts. Jones slips on his way to meet the ball and allows Saha to latch onto it, but the keeper recovers to make the stop at the Frenchman's feet. 88 Everton break and Saha misses a good chance to finish the game. Osman does well down the right and finds Jagielka outside him. He picks out Saha in space but he shoots over from the edge of the box. Should have at least hit the target. 88 Boro are certainly giving it a good go here and Everton are under pressure to preserve their 2-1 lead. 87 Downing's pace does for Baines down the Boro right. He finds Emnes and again Lescott is forced to make a vital block. 86 Osman powers in a cross-shot low and hard from the right but it flashes wide of the far post. 85 Pienaar trhreads a pass through for Saha but Jones comes out of his box to meet him and boot the ball clear. 84 The corner is initially dealt with but Boro manage to get the ball back and then Downing fires high and wide into the Gwladys Street End. 83 Jagielka concedes a corner as Johnson attacks down the left. 82 A chance for Boro. Everton get in a bit of mess at the back and the ball drops to Tuncay. He controls and gets a shot away but Lescott is on hand to make a crucial block. 81 Downing lifts the ball into the home box but Yobo, who has impressed today, heads away again. 81 Osman delivers the flag kick but Wheater heads away to safety. 80 Pienaar crosses to the near post, looking for Saha but Wheater heads away for a corner. 79 Baines' corner is into a dangerous area, but Boro clear. 78 Fellaini finds Pienaar and then gets it back via a backheel from the South African. He in turn finds Saha whose shot is deflected wide for a corner. Good move from the hosts - one of their best. 77 Saha slips a good ball into Felliani behind the defence but the Belgian can't take the pass in his stride. 76 Pienaar turns away from his marker and gets in a shot but the effort is weak and Jones makes a diving save. 75 With 15 minutes to go, Boro need a goal from somewhere. But with no strikers left on the bench and a poor scoring record it's not looking great for them right now. 74 Pienaar's free kick into the penalty area is comfortably dealt with by Boro. 73 Mark Bacon is back on after that Saha goal. Well, he did say Saha was just what the Everton doctor ordered. The hosts are in control at present but their lead is just a single goal so they need another to feel secure. 72 Bates is coming off now. Adam Johnson replaces him. Also an apology - it was Aliadiere who went off earlier. It had looked like Arca until Bates picked up that knock. 70 A poor ball into the box from home skipper Neville is straight to keeper Jones. No blue shirt was near that. 69 Bates is fit enough to hit a shot from all of 40 yards but it lacks great power and is straight at Howard. 68 Bates needs treatment. That knock may have prevented Boro making two changes there. 67 Here we go. Marvin Emnes replaces Arca for Boro. 65 Boro boss Gareth Southgate has signalled to his subs - it looks like he's about to shuffle his pack. 64 It's a great effort from Baines, over the wall, but the ball clips the top of the bar. Keeper Jones was rooted to the spot. It remains 2-1, however. 63 Pogatetz dives into a challenge with Cahill, who was already falling to the floor. Free kick 25 yards out and it's dead centre. 61 Saha makes a solid challenge on Pogatetz down near the touchline. Old 'Mad Dog' won't be too pleased at ending up in the hoardings! 60 O'Neil sends the free kick long. Tuncay flicks it on from the edge of the box but it just runs through for a goal kick. 59 Pienaar is warned by Mr Halsey after committing a foul on halfway. Still no yellow cards in this game though. 57 The man Manchester United fans nicknamed Balsa Wood Man due his fragility has done the trick for Everton. Boro look a little stunned right now. It's been all Everton in the last 10 minutes. 56 GOAL - SAHA. Osman wins the ball. His cross is over Saha at first but Pienaar sends it back in from the left and the Frenchman nods past Jones. What a turnaround - and a good substitution by David Moyes! 54 Baines delivers. Jones punches poorly and when the shot does come in from Saha, it blasts into Bates and knocks him down. He'll need treatment now. 53 Free kick now to Everton who aren't resting up after that equaliser. It;s just outside the box on the left. 52 Neville's long throw into the box is dealt with by Boro's defence. 51 Jones will be kicking himself after that moment of indecision. Everton's fans are now in full voice. 50 GOAL - FELLAINI. A good ball is delivered from deep on the right by Cahill and Felliani rises to head into the net. However, his task was made rather easy by keeper Jones initially coming for the cross, then stopping. He was left in no man's land and the ball looped over him and into the net. 1-1. 49 The flag kick is taken short to Baines but his cross is headed away strongly by Huth. 48 Everton's turn to win a corner down the left. 47 Aliadiere almost makes it 2-0. The ball is cut back from the left but his shot hits Lescott and is deflected behind for Boro's first corner of the game. 46 It looks like Cahill is dropping into midfield after Everton gets the action back under way. Restart: Everton act at half time, bringing on Louis Saha for the ineffective Rodwell. A positive change. Presumably either Cahill or Fellaini will drop a bit deeper now. Mark Bacon had emailed to say that was just what was needed. Let's see what happens now. A quick in-running betting update and Eveton are out from odds-on at start of play to 4/1 with Sky Bet. Their David Pilgrim says: "That goal has seen us move Boro into odds-on, quoting 4/5 that they hold for victory. It was a brilliant goal for a couple of punters who took 11/1 about Middlesbrough leading at half-time moments before the strike." The draw is now 19/10. Feedback: Junior Arub is back on. "Here you go. Could my prediction be true? There's our first goal hopefully more to come!" Any feedback to: andy.schooler@bskyb.com. Perhaps you'd like to comment on all the pushing and pulling going on between Everton's frontmen and the Boro defence. Surely it shouldn't be tolerated as it has been? 45+2 That's the half-time whistle and Everton are in trouble here. As we predicted earlier, they've struggled to create chances and Boro have made them pay with that Wheater goal late in the half. 45+1 O'Neil's free kick is aimed for Pogatetz but he can't find a meaningful touch. 45 There's a minute to be added on. 44 GOAL - WHEATER. O'Neil lifts another free kick into the box. It's headed out by Yobo but Bates swings it back in from the right and Wheater heads home. Howard got a hand to it at first and then scooped it out of the net but the linesman rightly said it had crossed the line. 43 Downing delivers again but this time Rodwell heads away. 42 Pienaar catches Bates late so it's a free kick wide on the right to the visitors. 41 Pienaar's corner is poor but it doesn't matter as the ref has finally spotted the pushing and pulling between Huth and Fellaini. 40 Jagielka lifts the ball to the back post for Felliani whose downward header is pushed around the post by Jones. Everton's best effort so far. 39 Aliadiere needs treatment after going down in a challenge with Lescott. He'll continue, at least for now. 38 Cahill tries to go past Huth in the box but the Boro defender comes out on top. Half-hearted shouts from the home fans were enver likely to earn a penalty, although there was a slight push. 37 O'Neil delivers the free kick but Jagielka heads away. When the ball comes back in an Everton defender mis-kicks but Cahil is behind to hack clear. 36 Jagielka catches Pogatetz from behind so it's a free kick on the left, not far outside the area. 35 This one is taken short but when Pienaar swings the ball into the box it's an easy claim for the keeper. 34 Baines gets down the left again and this time manages to win a corner. 33 Pienaar overhits a pass as Baines races down the left. A right waste of a good position that for the Toffees. 32 O'Neil overhits a cross from the right and Jagielka heads away at the far post. 31 Tuncay plays a good ball into Aliadiere in the penalty area. However, Yobo does well, coming across to make the block and Howard collects the loose ball. 30 Mr Halsey really needs to keep an eye on those battles between Fellaini and Roberth Huth and David Wheater. Cahill is also involved in many aerial challenges. Every time they go up someone's grabbed the other or a hand is in the face. Every free free kicks have been given so far. 28 Pienaar's corner runs right across the face of goal and out. The replays shows it actually got a flick off Bates, but no second corner is given by Mark Halsey. 27 Osman hits a snap shot from the edge of the box. It's over the bar but the ref says Bates' last-gasp challenge produced a touch so it's a corner. 26 All getting a bit scrappy at the moment, the ball spending a bit too much time off the deck. 24 Osman fails to a thread his pass through to Cahill or Fellaini, who is having a right physical battle with the two Boro centre-halves. 22 A quieter spell now, but Everton have certainly improved after a slow start. 20 The free kick from Julio Arca fails to find David Wheater in the box and the ball runs out for a goal kick. 19 Neville catches Tuncay late in midfield. No card though. 18 Osman opts to float the ball into the box towards Yobo but it's defended well by Boro. Better spell this from the hosts though. 17 Another Everton free kick deep in Boro territory - Emanuel Pogatetz fouled Fellani. This one is about 30 yards out and is pretty central. 16 A good corner to the near post from Osman finds Yobo's head but keeper Brad Jones makes the save. 15 Baines whips the ball in and it finds Fellani's head. However, his goalbound header is headed away by Bates. Osman follows up with a shot that is deflected away for the first corner. 14 Leighton Baines gets down the left well and when O'Neil challenges, the ref deems it a foul. Free kick in a good position. 13 A loose pass from Fellaini gives Boro possession in Everton territory but Jagielka comes to the rescue. 12 Boro have certainly started the better here. Everton are lacking in midfield - that area where Arteta is missing. It's Phil Neville and teenager Jack Rodwell in the centre there today. 11 Best chance of the game goes begging. Bates gets to the byline and cuts the ball back for Aliadiere but the Frenchman lifts his shot over the bar from just eight yards. It should be 1-0 to Boro. 10 Yobo blocks a long-range shot from Downing. 9 Boro win a free kick wide on the right. Downing swings it in dangerously but Jagielka heads away. Moments later Gary O'Neil gets into a good position at the far post from a cross but he's offside. 8 Yobo's long ball up to Fellaini is nodded down to Cahill in the box but the offside flag goes up. 7 Matthew Bates catches Cahill on the follow through of a tackle. No action is taken and thankfully for the hosts the Australian is OK. 5 Tuncay tries to send Downing down the wing but the ball clips the England man's heel and the attack breaks down. 3 Yobo stops another Boro attack, hacking the ball into touch with a good old fashioned defender's swing of the leg. 2 It's pretty windy in the north today, so conditions could have been to blame for Howard's early error there. that's probably being kind. 1 Tuncay is stopped by Yobo in the box, but the ball breaks to Downing. His cross from the left is chased by Tim Howard way beyond the far post. He flaps, the ball falls to Tuncay who centres from the other side but Howard's defenders get him out of trouble by heading away. Kick-off: We're ready to go and Boro get us under way at Goodison. Feedback: Another neutral perspective comes from Manchester United fan Anna, who says: "I'm looking forward to this game as it's the closest contest of the quarter-finals. I'm predicting an Everton win and hoping we get Chelsea in the semis." For those of you who don't know, that draw is taking place around 1845 GMT today. Make sure you check back on our site then to see who gets who. A quick betting update and Everton have been well backed today. Sky Bet currently offer 8/11 about a home win with Boro at 9/2. The draw is a 23/10 shot. My thoughts are Everton may be a bit short at 8/11. They've certainly felt the absence of Mikel Arteta - they've had two goalless draws since he got injured while they hardly sparkled in beating West Brom last weekend. The problem with backing Boro is their Jekyll and Hyde nature. They beat Liverpool last Saturday and then were hammered at Spurs in midweek. Feedback: A bullish response from Dylan Fearon. "Everton will dominate and will win 2-0 thanks to Lescott and Cahill," he says. But Chris Richards is backing a 2-0 Boro win "with Downing and Alves scoring". Feedback: Boro fan Junior Ayub emails to say: "Despite the totally unpredictable season we are having at the moment I do believe this could be a turning point or should I say the FA Cup could be a little booster for us to avoid the drop which I know we are going to do anyway. We are going for a 13th consecutive season in the top flight and I cannot see that slipping whilst Steve Gibson still has something to say about it. But the form of Tuncay, Stewart Downing and Jeremie Aliadiere is vital in the survival battle, I feel more so than even Afonso Alves who, no matter what anyone says, can and will prove a lethal goalscorer whether that be at Boro or not." Middlesbrough team: Jones, Hoyte, Huth, Wheater, Pogatetz, O'Neil, Arca, Bates, Downing, Sanli, Aliadiere. Subs: Turnbull, Taylor, Emnes, Adam Johnson, McMahon, Franks, Walker. Everton team: Howard, Neville, Yobo, Jagielka, Lescott, Pienaar, Rodwell, Osman, Baines, Fellaini, Cahill. Subs: Nash, Van der Meyde, Castillo, Saha, Jacobsen, Gosling, Wallace. Team news: For Boro, Marlon King is cup-tied so it's Jeremie Aliadiere up front with Tuncay. Team news: Everton are back in a familiar boat today - starting without a recognised striker. Instead Tim Cahill (pronounced fit) and Marouane Fellaini (in the for cup-tied Jo) will be their players furthest forward. Steven Pienaar and Leon Osman have also recovered from knocks. Louis Saha starts on the bench again despite his goal last weekend against West Brom. With Tony Hibbert still missing, Barclays player of the month Phil Jagielka again plays at right-back with Joseph Yobo and Joleon Lescott in central defence. We'll bring you the full teams in a moment. Welcome to today's FA Cup quarter-final between Everton and Middlesbrough. The hosts start as favourites to progress to the Wembley semis but they will know the unpredictable Boro performed well at Goodison earlier in the season when the sides drew 1-1. If you have any thoughts on the game, or perhaps how well you think Everton have done given their lack of strikers this season, let me know by emailing: andy.schooler@bskyb.com Kick-off is at 1600 GMT.
