Everton suspend Jo after Brazil trip

Jo, who has failed to score in any of his 16 Premier League appearances since rejoining the Goodison Park club on a season-long loan this summer, left England for personal reasons before Christmas, rendering him unavailable for Everton's games with Burnley and Sunderland. He has since returned but has not been allowed to rejoin his team-mates. [LNB]Moyes insisted the suspension was merely a 'short-term' measure, but it is believed he and Everton chairman Bill Kenwright have discussed the logistics of cancelling his loan arrangement. Asked whether Jo would be able to salvage his career at Goodison Park, Moyes simply replied: 'I will leave it for now and make a decision later.' [LNB]Everton will have to pay £13m to sign Steven DefourEverton likely to re-sign Jo on loan from Manchester City'He went back to Brazil without permission from the football club,' said Moyes. 'He is now back but at this moment in time he is suspended from the football club. I am disappointed because we like Jo. He has been a really good lad and we have enjoyed having him but there has to be discipline at all football clubs. [LNB]'He left over a busy period for us and left us short of players, so I find that very difficult. It is just a short term thing at the moment and that could change over the coming weeks.' City have previously indicated they have no desire to call the player, who joined for £19 million in June 2008, back to Eastlands, although the Manchester club continue to pay his wages. [LNB]His suspension, together with Yakubu's departure for the African Cup of Nations and Louis Saha's continuing injury troubles, means Everton are likely to face Carlisle in the FA Cup third round today without any of their front-line strikers. [LNB]The game will be watched from the stands by Landon Donovan, the American international who has joined Everton on loan from LA Galaxy until March, while Moyes is hopeful of adding several more new faces to his squad in the coming weeks, though he admits the club's financial restrictions will confine him to the loan market. [LNB]'It does make it more difficult to build long-term,' he said. 'But if you look at our record, some of our best players, like Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar, have been brought in on loan.'
