Everton FC’s Yakubu in goal pledge

YAKUBU hopes to make history repeat itself - by leaving a trail of goals behind him when he departs for the African Cup of Nations in January.[LNB]The Nigerian hit-man has so far struggled to hold down a starting place in the Everton team, since returning from the Achilles injury which kept him out of action for almost a year.[LNB]He scored in his long-awaited comeback against Hull in the Carling Cup, and netted against Chelsea in the league this month but has largely had to be content with a place on the bench.[LNB]Now the 27-year-old is desperate to score some vital goals for Everton before he goes to the African Cup of Nations with Nigeria, just like he did during the 2007/08 season.[LNB]The Yak scored in the quarter final and semi-final of Everton's Carling Cup run that season, and left with the Blues on the brink of a place in the final if they could beat Chelsea.[LNB]He said: 'I would like to help the team a little bit before I go like I did last time with those cup goals.[LNB]'At the moment we are struggling and it's very up and down, but when we get some of the injured players back and start winning again we'll be OK.[LNB]'We as players are not happy with the position we are in at all. We need to start winning and picking up more points.[LNB]'For me I think I'm 100% fit, and I just need to wait for my time and get my chance to play. I'm going to the African cup and hopefully I can get in more training, play more games and that will make me fitter and fitter when I come back and I can be starting more games.[LNB]'I always believe I can score goals as a striker.'
