Everton comfortably beaten by classy Benfica - all the action as it happened

05 November 2009 10:03
Everton host Benfica in the Europa League Group I clash with one thing on their mind - revenge! After the 5-0 drubbing they received at the hands of tonight's opposition a fortnight ago David Moyes' men will be looking to put the record straight, and earn some valuable points as they hope to progress into the next phase. Sportsmail has all the action from 8.05pm.

EVERTON 0 BENFICA 2 (FT)  21.57: FULL TIME The referee puts Moyes' boys out of their misery by calling time. The hosts were well beaten in the end by a classy and well organised Benfica - in all honesty it could have been more than two in the end.

Everton aren't in the greatest vein of form at the moment but are by no means out of this competition. That's all from me tonight - don't forget we'll have all the reaction here first with Sportsmail.

21.52: We'll have four minutes added on - in all honesty the ref should blow for time now - this game is over as a spectacle.

21.49: The fantastic Saviola comes off - Menezes takes his place.

21.48: Chance for Distin! The shot from distance fell to the big defender six-yards out by Cesar saved well to his right. That would have made it an interesting last five minutes or so.

21.46: Apart from the occasional firework popping around this ground, the only noise you can hear is from the Benfica fans who are shouting 'ole' every time a player in red touches the ball.

21.43: Yakubu trots off to be replaced by Agard.

Award winning Cardoza: Oscar celebrates Benfica's second

21.38: There was some wonderful build-up to that goal as Aimar skipped through the Everton defence but the goal came thanks to a huge slice of luck. Saviola's shot was blocked and it fell to Cordoza to prod home. A hint off offside there, too.

21.37: GOAL! Cordoza doubles the lead for the visitors.

21.36: Saviola goes into the book for dissent.

21.32: David Moyes makes a move to try and turn this game around - it's Jo on for Gosling.

21.28: Goodison Park is now mute.

21.26: The Toffees stood off, allowing Di Maria to tear forward - his effort was blocked but fell kindly to Saviola who gave Howard no chance. Pablo Aimar has come on for Coentrao, too.

21.25: GOAL! Saviola slams the visitors in front.

Saviola strikes: Benfica take the lead at Goodison Park

21.22: Great effort from Di Maria - his looked up and had a pop from 20-yards. Smart save from Howard put it over. Corner.

21.21: The WORST freekick you will ever see - Bilyaletdinov kicks it out of play, 15 yards ahead of Hibbert - its intended target.

21.17: That's Karma right there - Cardoza plays Di Maria in behind Yobo but he blazed over the bar. That'll teach ya for rolling around pointlessly on the floor.

21.16: Good Lord, get up, will you. Di Maria hits the deck after the merest of touches from Fellaini. He hangs onto his ankle like the big-haired one attacked him with a hammer. Embarrassing.

21.13: Rodwell goes into the book after a shove on Coentrao who was looking to break after a sloppy pass from Fellaini.

21.09: Di Maria does his level best to win a freekick on the edge of the box. He rolled a good 34 times but the ref and fourth, or is it fifth official (?) at that end was having none of it.

21.06: SECOND HALF - The players are back out, Yakubu rolls the ball to Cahill and therefore the second half has started. No changes to either side.

Heads it's mine: Cahill leaps above Coentrao and Sidnei to win the ball

20.52: A pretty evenly matched half with a hatful of chances at either end. Everton collapsed just after the restart in the match two weeks ago - let's hope we avoid a repeat. Back in 15.

20.51: HALF TIME The ref blows for the end of the first half.

20.50: We'll have one minute added on.

20.49: More woe for Ramires, he takes a knock in 'groin area' and has to hobble off. He's replaced by Maxi Pereira.

8.45: Benfica hit the post and then . Great save from Howard! Ramires' downward header smacks the upright, in fell to Saviola who smashed it from seven-yards but the big American was there to parry.

8.38: Two great chances at either end - Distin lost his man for a moment but Cardozo's effort flew back over his head with the goal gaping in front of him Then Cahill's header lacked power to beat Cesar from six-yards as Everton swept upfield.

8.34: Baines and Howard get themselves in a right pickle - no name on the ball and the two collided as Saviola's cross came into the box. Fortunately Howard got a bit on the ball and it bounced harmlessly at his feet.

8.30: Yakubu whips in a cross that gets a huge deflection, Cesar had to tip over. Corner.

Sliding through: Hibbert denies Fabio Coentrao

8.26: Yakubu is a lucky, lucky boy to remain on the pitch. His challenge goes well over the ball and connects with Ramires' shin - however referee Said Ennjimi deemed it just a yellow card offence.

8.22: Everton may have had the better of the chances but I really should mention Benfica's passing - it's magnificent. It's Arsenal-esque. Well, almost.

8.20: Great chance for Yakubu! A delightful touch took the ball past Luisao but, under pressure, he hurried his shot and it went wide from six-yards.

8.16: A fine snap-shot from Di Maria has Howard scrambling for second but he gets plenty behind it.

8.13: Chance for Cahill - well, I say chance, he volleyed miles over and was offside but he got into a great position off Fellaini's flick. More positive stuff from the home side.

8.09: A breathless start from both sides! Fellaini picks up on a loose pass to shoot from distance and then Saviola broke into the box and tested Howard froma very tight angle. No goals yet but some great action.

Blue battle: Yakubu holds off the challenge of Benfica's Sidnei

8.05: The first half kicks off to a crescendo of noise and the announcer giving us the frequency of a radio station with which you can listen to the game - isn't being at the ground enough?

7.59: Looks like a sell-out at Goodison this evening - I should stop using the word 'revenge' but I'm sure there's one or two Evertonians hoping for plenty of fireworks in and around the Benfica goal tonight. Fireworks - it's November 5th, you see. Very clever. We'll have some football for you presently.

7.48: The team news for you . David Moyes made two changes with John Heitinga and Lucas Neill ineligible, Tony Hibbert and Dan Gosling have returned to the side for this game.

Hibbert has recovered from a bout of flu which caused him to miss the draw against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Yobo, Distin, Baines, Gosling, Fellaini, Rodwell, Bilyaletdinov, Cahill, Yakubu. Subs: Nash, Jo, Coleman, Duffy, Agard, Baxter, Wallace.

Benfica: Julio Cesar, Ruben Amorim, Sidnei, Luisao, David Luiz, Di Maria, Ramires, Javi Garcia, Fabio Coentrao, Cardozo, Saviola. Subs: Quim, Shaffer, Aimar, Maxi Pereira, Weldon, Nuno Gomes, Felipe Menezes.

7.45pm: Good evening and welcome to Sportsmail's coverage of Everton versus Benfica from Goodison Park.

To say that David Moyes' side are looking for a little bit payback after the 5-0 drubbing the club suffered at the hands of the Portuguese in Lisbon a fortnight ago would be something of an understatement.

Tim Howard told Sportsmail today that Benfica 'gave us a real pasting. [We] lost some of our pride. Now we've got them back [at Goodison] we'll be doing all we can to have a good win.' Indeed, they will.

I'll have all the team news as and when I get and the action is here from the somewhat unorthodox time of 8.05pm.
