The £18million fee still looks inflated, even by Manchester City's standards, but Jo's belated emergence as a striker of genuine Barclays Premier League standing gathered pace at Goodison Park yesterday. Everton's first four-goal haul of the season, making it seven straight wins at home for the first time in 15 years, was enough on its own to spread a smile across David Moyes' normally stern exterior. Seeing his judgment in the transfer market vindicated once more widened it still further. The decision to take Jo on loan in January could have been based only on evidence gathered prior to a calamitous start to the Brazilian front-runner's Eastlands career, but it hardly seemed to matter. Moyes had seen enough on scouting trips to Jo's previous club CSKA Moscow and backed his instinct in a way that is reaping rewards on a similar scale to some of his other bold transfer moves. Just as Tim Cahill, Joleon Lescott and Phil Jagielka have all provedinspired acquisitions, Jo has added a crucial cutting edge that provedtoo sharp for Wigan as Everton put 10 points between themselves and oneof their main rivals for a Europa League place.
