Everton 3 Stoke 1: Moyes in seventh heaven as Jo and Lescott shine

15 March 2009 02:20
David Moyes can celebrate his seventh anniversary as Everton

manager today afterMarouane Fellaini killed off a Stoke

fightback.

The Scot endured a difficult second half until the Belgium midfielder scored in the 90th minute on another miserable day for Tony Pulis' side.

The hosts took the lead in the 18th minute. Jo latched on to a through ball from Fellaini, who has dispensed with his big hairdo, and scored with a low shot undergoalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.

Joleon Lescott added the second goal in the 24th minute, tapping in from close range after Sorensen could only parry a powerful Tim Cahill header from LeonOsman's cross.

Ryan Shawcross pulled a goal back for Stoke seven minutes after the break when he rose unchallenged to head in Liam Lawrence's corner.

Then, with Stoke pressing for the equaliser, Fellaini controlled a Leighton Baines pass and turned to fire under Sorensen.

Moyes said: 'We have not got the football flowing as we would like but I will take the wins.'

Pulis, whose side slipped back into the bottom three, said: 'We have started badly away on lots of occasions and there may be a mental block we have to get over. In the second half, for 25 minutes, we had Everton hanging on.

'Survival is in our hands with nine games to go. We have a fantastic chance of doing it and have to approach every game as positively as we did the second half.'
