Everton 3 Carlisle United 1: match report

02 January 2010 17:13
It was eventually comfortable for Everton but last season's beaten FA Cup finalists were given a mighty scare by League One promotion outsiders Carlisle United in a compelling Goodison Park encounter. [LNB]Everton secured a 12th minute lead against the run of play, James Vaughan scoring on his first senior start although he had previously been on target in one of three previous substitute appearances. [LNB]Kevan Hurst equalised for Carlisle six minutes later and then Danny Livesey struck the first ball deep into the second half before Tim Cahill and a Leighton Baines penalty confirmed Everton's overall superiority. [LNB]Carlisle, backed by a vociferous 6,000-strong following commenced in enterprising manner to provide an uncomfortable initial 10 minutes for the home side although any nerves were finally dispelled when they were gifted the lead that was much against the run of play. [LNB]Adam Clayton's attempt at a long back-pass fell disastrously short and Vaughan quickly exploited the error by rounding the oncoming Carlisle goalkeeper Adam Collin to score with ease. [LNB]It was an advantage Everton held uneasily and within six minutes Carlisle equalised. And Clayton erased his error when he muscled through the home defence before rifling in an angled shot to which Hurst added the final touch. [LNB]Vaughan had the ball in the Carlisle net a second time in the 24th minute but this time he was offside after Collin had parried Cahill's initial attempt. [LNB]Vaughan against went close, narrowly heading wide although Howard had to competently deal with long range drives from Ian Harte and Matthew Robson as Carlisle continued to play with authority. [LNB]They remained lively and aggressive on the resumption and twice in five minutes Howard, rapidly becoming the busier goalkeeper was forced to make hurried saves from Clayton and Hurst. [LNB]Everton's response was tinged with frustration as Marouane Fellaini twice went close while Vaughan, too, was similarly denied. [LNB]However it was Carlisle who remained the more threatening and the home side had a close call in the 70th minute when the visiting captain Livesey, accepting a header from Harte for his thunderous shot cannoned back from the underside of the crossbar. [LNB]But six minutes from the end Cahill delivered to snap brave visiting resistance and Baines confirmed home success with an injury time penalty after Collin had pulled down substitute Kieran Agard.
