Everton 2 Burnley 0: Forgotten man Vaughan fires Toffees out of sticky spot

28 December 2009 21:50
[LNB]David Moyes knew who to turn to in Everton's hour-and-a-half of need on Monday and James Vaughan did not disappoint as he added another dramatic entry to a fledgling career that has already been packed with highs and lows. [LNB]Everton were making heavy weather of a game they had to win, against the team with the worst away record in the Barclays Premier League, when Moyes summoned Vaughan from the bench eight minutes from time.[LNB] Eighty seconds later, the prospect of dropping points to a side who had mustered only one on their travels this season suddenly receded as the England Under 21 striker again demonstrated the benefit of being in the right place at the right time. [LNB]Welcome back: Vaughan, in only his third appearance, fires Everton ahead [LNB]Ayegbeni Yakubu swung wildly at Marouane Fellaini's left-wing crossand looked to have blown his side's best chance after failing to makecontact. Instead, he was given an object lesson in cool, clinicalfinishing as Vaughan kept his head at the far post to steer the chanceover the line. [LNB]The 21-year-old's first goal for two years continued the fluctuatingpattern of an Everton career that has never been less than eventful. Itstarted with a substitute's appearance against Crystal Palace in April2005, when he went on in the 73rd minute and, just 11 minutes later, became not only the Premier League's youngest goalscorer but theyoungest in Everton's history. [LNB]A priceless winner against 10-man Burnley kept him on course for along-term future at Goodison Park, but there must have been times inbetween when he wondered whether he would be playing for anyone. [LNB]Two bouts of major knee surgery by renowned specialist RichardSteadman, a shoulder operation and a severed artery in his foot havecombined to test his resilience to the limit and even a three-monthloan spell with Derby this season was cut short by a damaged cartilage.[LNB] Best player: Everton's Steven Pienaar (right) scored his side's second goal[LNB]Moyes felt he would be better off recuperating at Goodison and wasforced to include him among the substitutes ahead of schedule afterLouis Saha (hamstring) and Jo (ankle) succumbed to injury.[LNB] Without a single reserve team appearance since returning from PridePark and with 12 minutes of Premier League action to his name thisseason, Vaughan shrugged aside any rustiness to help Everton registeronly their second League win in 13 games and their first at home sinceSeptember 20. [LNB]Moyes said: 'I was delighted for James after all he has beenthrough. He has had two years of injury problems and a very difficulttime, but he hasn't lost his knack of being Johnny-on-the-spot. [LNB]'He has trained hard and tried to come back, then not been able to.That has been the pattern and it means he has missed a big part of hisdevelopment. It has been a slow process and even now, he is not fullyfit. He is still on his way back from injury, still striving for fullfitness, but at least he was able to come up with an important goal.' [LNB] Marching orders: Jordan trudges off the field after receiving his second booking [LNB]Steven Pienaar ended any arguments with a clever near-post finish ininjury time, but it was Vaughan's breakthrough that irked Burnleymanager Owen Coyle as tempers threatened to boil over in a heatedsecond half. [LNB]Coyle had no complaints about Stephen Jordan's senseless 62nd-minutedismissal for a second booking, after the Burnley full back grabbedPienaar's shirt, but he was incensed at Vaughan's goal being allowed tostand and just as irate over another refereeing decision that left himat loggerheads with Everton assistant manager Steve Round. [LNB]Referee: Howard Webb.[LNB][LNB]Both received a ticking off from the fourth official and Coyle said:'It is a passionate game and I believe in having my say. Steve and Ihad a difference of opinion about a decision, but you move on. [LNB]'I thought we were terrific, but there is a mixture of emotions, disappointment and anger among them at the way we ended upempty-handed. When Vaughan scored, Yakubu was standing on the line, right in front of Brian Jensen. Brian instinctively stuck his foot outand almost stopped the shot, but it's not easy trying to see round sucha big physical presence as Yakubu. [LNB]'It had to be offside and while it may have been difficult for thereferee to judge, he was entitled to expect some help from hisassistant.' [LNB]Yakubu steered a Leighton Baines cross against the post in the 22ndminute and Burnley's David Nugent was left holding his head in the 59thminute after driving against the far upright from the corner of thesix-yard area. [LNB]Apart from that, clear-cut chances were few and far betweeen - until Vaughan marked his latest return in winning style.[LNB] No diving?
