Defending depresses Moyes
23 Mar 2009 - 09:14:11
David Moyes was unhappy with his side's display at Fratton Park as Everton slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Portsmouth despite taking an early lead.
Everton led thanks to Leighton Baines' free-kick but then defended poorly as Peter Crouch grabbed a brace to consign the Toffees to only their second defeat in 19 games.
Moyes thought the corner from which Pompey equalised should not have been awarded but accepted his side deserved nothing from the game.
"It wasn't a corner kick," he said. "But there are no excuses for the way we defended it either.
"We should have done much better but we just didn't get together the way we should have done.
"Leighton Baines scored a good goal. We've been hoping he'd score some. He scored a few when he was at Wigan.
"We've been working with him along with Steve Round and he got a sight of goal and it worked.
"Lars Jacobsen did fine on his debut. I'm pleased he got a game. I wanted to give the boy an opportunity and he got that today albeit in a difficult game."
