David Moyes rubs salt into Liverpool's wounds

Teenage substitute Dan Gosling scored with just two minutes of extra time remaining to send Goodison Park into raptures, Everton into the fifth round and give Moyes what he admitted was one of the proudest nights of almost seven years at the club. [LNB]But even in the aftermath of victory, Moyes found time to question how well-equipped Liverpool are to live up to the high standards demanded of them by fans and media alike. Benitez's side might be in the midst of their first real title challenge for 20 years, but Moyes feels they are over-rated. [LNB]Referring to the latter, Moyes said: "What are you lot going to do now? All those Liverpool fans, especially in the local press. The way you build that side up. I bet you're all stunned tonight. We completely controlled the game, although neither side played especially well. After the sending off we had as much control as Liverpool did in the first game at Anfield, but we struggled to find a way through, just like they did. [LNB]"This has been one of the proudest moments for me as a manager, of course. We've shown against the top four this season that we can compete with them. We drew with Arsenal, we drew with Manchester United here and we drew with Liverpool twice at Anfield. Now we've beaten them. [LNB]"There is more to come, though. We're learning and getting up to their level. The fans were desperate for a win tonight, but then so were Liverpool's." [LNB]They were indeed, though judging from the muted noise from the Paddock perhaps not quite as desperate. Regardless of that, Benitez was clearly hugely disappointed with the result. [LNB]He insisted he will only find out on Thursday the extent of the injury suffered by Steven Gerrard, who limped off after just quarter of an hour, clutching his hamstring. He is almost certain not to feature for Liverpool at Fratton Park on Saturday or for England in Spain next Wednesday. [LNB]"Maybe he will have to go to London and do three scans for the FA just to be careful," snapped Benitez. "We will see. Everyone was saying he had to play every minute of every game, he was hurt against Wigan and now we see the consequences. He asked for the substitution. We do not know the extent, but he was injured." [LNB]No doubt a wry smile crossed the face of Robbie Keane to see Gerrard limp from the field, knowing that had Benitez not taken the huge gamble of selling him he would undoubtedly have made an appearance there and then. [LNB]Instead, he watched as Liverpool struggled to cope with Everton's intensity, despite the injection of confidence from dispatching Chelsea on Sunday after a January they will want to forget must have given them. [LNB]But Benitez, who insisted he did not want to be drawn into criticising referee Alan Wiley's decision to send Lucas off because "it would not change anything", believes his team are sufficiently self-assured to cope with what he admitted was a blow. [LNB]Benitez said: "I do not think it will damage our confidence. We are disappointed but now we will have to concentrate on the league and the Champions League. We are in a good position in both. You always want to do well in the Cup but we must move on." [LNB]
