Everton have agreed a new one-year contract with Lee Carsley, ending speculation that the veteran midfielder was poised to sign for Wigan Athletic.

The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international was out of contract at Goodison Park in the summer, but has agreed terms on a new 12-month deal after revealing his desire to play in Europe with the Toffees.

David Moyes' side earned a place in next year's UEFA Cup after a sixth-place finish in the Premiership this season.

Carsley, who arrived at Everton in 2002 from Coventry City, made 42 appearances for the Toffees last season.

"I am absolutely delighted to be honest. I have had a fantastic time here and hopefully that can continue now," he told the club's official website.

"Myself and the gaffer sat down two or three months ago and he said he wanted me to stay and I said I wanted to stay as well. I am just glad we have come to an agreement.

"We have got the UEFA Cup to look forward to next season.

"The manager has got the right blend at the minute and that is important."
