Carlos Tevez withdraws Manchester City transfer request after dramatic day of talks

21 December 2010 12:44
Carlos Tevez has reached an uneasy truce with Manchester City and agreed to stay at Eastlands. [LNB]A meeting with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak prompted him to withdraw his transfer request, and he captained City the 2-1 home defeat by Everton which saw the club fail in a bid to top the League at Christmas for the first time since 1929. [LNB]Tevez was called to an emergency meeting with Khaldoon and chief executive Garry Cook earlier in the day at City's Carrington training ground. [LNB] U-turn: Carlos Tevez is staying at Manchester City after all[LNB]An hour later Tevez emerged having told the club he would stay and try to drive City into the Champions League over the remainder of the season. [LNB]City remain confident the 26-year-old will stay beyond the summer and were privately insisting last night they will make sure he sees out a five-year-contract due to expire in the summer of 2014. [LNB]Whether any of that actually happens, however, remains to be seen. This saga began when Tevez handed in a transfer request two weeks ago and yesterday's development brings some stability to the club. [LNB]Thumbs up: City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive Garry Cook held an emergency meeting with Tevez[LNB]However, it is understood that Tevez still feels some issues remain, particularly those relating to Garry Cook. The two, Sportsmail understands, have clashed over 'a personal matter' and Tevez's opinion of the former Nike executive is said to remain unchanged. [LNB]Despite Monday night's uneasy truce, City still intend to pursue Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.[LNB]A statement put together by City in conjunction with Tevez's representative Kia Joorabchian insisted the player has not received a pay rise - or indeed the promise of one - in order to ease negotiations. [LNB]Indeed, high-level club sources insisted last night they will not renegotiate any of their star players' contracts until they are at least halfway through. In Tevez's case, this would be next Christmas. [LNB]City's statement said: 'Manchester City can confirm to their fans that "clear-the-air" talks have been held with Carlos Tevez. [LNB]'During the meeting Carlos expressed his absolute commitment to the club and formally withdrew his transfer request. [LNB]'Carlos' contract remains unchanged and both Carlos and the football club are keen to focus on the opportunities that lie ahead.' [LNB]City chairman Khaldoon flew into Manchester on Sunday night for a prearranged visit. The club insisted he did not travel just to see Tevez. [LNB]However, having realised that progress had been made during a brief discussion between Tevez and Mancini on Friday, Khaldoon decided to intervene. [LNB]It is understood Khaldoon's stance was bullish, telling Tevez he would not be allowed to leave and that the club captain would be bound to the club by his contract even if he decided not to play. [LNB] Target man: Manchester City still intend to lodge a bid for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko[LNB]However, Khaldoon was also left underthe impression that Tevez hadn't really wanted to leave in the first place. [LNB]Again, the strength of that conviction will be tested by Tevez's actions in the coming weeks. [LNB]It is understood Tevez spoke at the meeting of the importance of 'honour' and 'commitment' and seemed to accept - at least outwardly - that Eastlands will remain his home for the foreseeable future. [LNB]City were keen to stress how important Mancini had been in the process of persuading Tevez to stay. It will, however, be interesting to see how the relationship between star player and manager develops over the season. [LNB] Here for now: Tevez has committed his future to Manchester City despite last week admitting he was 'homesick'[LNB]Despite Tevez's suggestion in a statement last week that he had no problem with Mancini, the Italian knows full well the South American does not like him. [LNB]How Tevez can go from a player who ishomesick and feels betrayed by 'broken promises' to one ready to committhe best years of his career to City remains largely unexplained by thestatement issued. Many will simply expect Tevez to stick around until City receive a suitable offer. [LNB]City supporters understandably chose not to look that far ahead. They cheered his name as it was read out before kick-off and cheered him when he emerged for the game, but they were not cheering 20 minutes later as City fell 2-0 behind. [LNB]Mancini said: 'We lost game in first 10 minutes. We are frustrated. We had chance to go top. Now we must re-start, the season is long.'
