Cahill - We must respond

24 October 2009 12:49
Tim Cahill is hoping Everton can react immediately after the "harsh lesson" they learned against Benfica on Thursday. The Toffees' threadbare side was thrashed 5-0 at Estadio da Luz and currently lie 11th in the Premier League. Cahill was named captain for the Lisbon clash in the absence of Phil Neville and Joseph Yobo, but his proud moment was quickly soured on the pitch. Now the Australian is hoping that Everton can put the European disappointment behind them with a convincing win against Bolton on Sunday. "It was a harsh lesson and not a good feeling. But maybe it is the wake-up call we needed," Cahill said. "For some of the players who have been at Everton for a long time, it is now time for us to react. "I was devastated on Thursday night because it was one of the best days of my life being made captain, but the worst because of the result." He added: "I am the kind of player who will take the flak and I can't wait for the Bolton game. "We are still sitting pretty in the Europa League and we can hit Bolton on the rebound now."
