Beckford wants to be Jermaine man

ew Everton striker Jermaine Beckford is confident he can make the step up from League One and make a contribution in the top flight. Beckford completed his move to Goodison Park in May after his contract expired at Leeds. The 26-year-old may be a relatively late arrival in the Premier League - having been playing non-league football with Wealdstone just over four years ago - but is looking forward to the challenge. "It is a club I feel I can learn a lot from and I hope I will be able to bring something different to the team," said Beckford, who scored 31 goals in helping Leeds earn promotion to the Championship last season. "I'm not setting any real targets at the moment, I'm just looking forward to trying to establish myself here." Beckford is currently with the rest of the squad for their pre-season tour of Australia but is keen for the new campaign to start, with Everton kicking off at Blackburn on August 14. Beyond that he is looking forward to his first Merseyside derby, at Goodison, in mid-October. "There has only been one session with the ball so far. We've done a lot of running but that is what you expect at this time of the pre-season," he said. "But everybody has been very welcoming and I've had a great time in the few days I have had so far and I can't wait to get started properly." "I am looking forward to every single game but all the boys have been saying that the derbies are special. "I am looking forward to hopefully playing and sampling the atmosphere because I've heard it's electric. "Goodison is amazing. I've been there once a couple of years ago for a game and the atmosphere was special. I can't wait to play there."
