Barry Horne: Now is Phil Jagielka’s chance to shine for England

I AGREE with Phil Neville, and not for the first time. The Blues skipper reckons now is the time for Phil Jagielka to establish himself as first choice at the heart of England’s defence, and I think he is spot on. We all know the issues surrounding the old guard of Rio Ferdinand and John Terry, so the door is open for Jagielka – as it is for his Goodison Park colleague Leighton Baines too – to make his name. I think his credentials are greater than those of Gary Cahill, Ryan Shawcross or any other prospective England centre back. He is in fine form for his club, and has done well whenever called upon for his country. It would be good to see him given an extended run by Roy Hodgson.
