Baines aims for top-four spot

Everton defender Leighton Baines knows that the club needs more strength in depth if they are to challenge for honours both domestically and in Europe next term.

David Moyes' side finished fifth in the Premier League to qualify for next season's UEFA Cup and former Wigan Athletic star Baines is pleased the club has been linked with several high-profile names already this summer.

He said: "The lads who've been here have done fantastic over the last couple of years, but the club's always got to look to progress and, if there are players out there to be brought in, then it's in the club's interests to do that.

"We're a club that's looking to go forward and we've made steady progress now over the past couple of years so hopefully, if there are players out there, we can get them in and do even better.

"We did well against some of the top-four teams last year and only lost by the odd goal, so we don't feel that we're a million miles away from a Champions League place at the moment.

"And if we can beat the teams around us and hopefully collect a few more points from the bigger clubs then we're going to have a good chance of getting in there."
