Baines targets England call

Everton defender Leighton Baines has expressed his desire to break back into the England squad. Baines was called into the squad last season but did not make his full debut and he has now been left out of Fabio Capello's plans for the upcoming games against Slovenia and Croatia. Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge are established as the first and second choice left-backs but Baines still has ambitions to play at next summer's World Cup. The 24-year-old, who was capped 16 times at Under 21 level, accepts that he will have to improve his performances for Everton if he wants to earn a recall. The Toffees have made a slow start to the season, losing their opening two Premier League games before bouncing back with a victory over Wigan. "I've had a taste of the England squad so the World Cup finals are always at the back of your mind," said Baines. "I just have to play well and hope to impress the England coach. "I am keen to get back into that. But that will only happen if my own form is good and the team continue to do well. "Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge are probably the two automatic selections and with good reason, because they are two top players. "At the moment I have got to get my form up and back to where I want it to be, like the rest of us here. "Hopefully if I can get there the other things will take care of themselves."
