All quiet on the Mersey front in January sales as transfer window ends
'THERE are a lot of players out there, but given the prices being asked, I just do not see the value.'[LNB]The thoughts of Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson before Christmas when asked if he would be dipping his toes in the muddy waters of the January transfer market.[LNB]Apparently still with the bulk of the £80million windfall received for Cristiano Ronaldo last summer burning a hole in his pockets, prudence should not be a major concern for this particular Scot.[LNB]But as he watched from the directors' box at Craven Cottage on Saturday as Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor brushed aside Chris Smalling for his first of the afternoon, Ferguson might now be questioning the wisdom of his sizeable outlay for the Fulham defender.[LNB]Concerns about value for money, however, held extra resonance on Merseyside where it seems recent news that we are now officially out of a global recession is yet to reach Anfield and Goodison.[LNB]While Sky Sports had a reporter at every football outpost in Great Britain from Truro to Wick yesterday, they needn't have bothered sending one here.[LNB]As Jack Cork's loan move from Chelsea to Burnley was exclusively announced with two hours 34 minutes and 11 seconds to go, there was little movement on Mers- eyside other than for Watford striker Marvin Sordell's one month loan switch to Tranmere Rovers.[LNB]All other business had been signed and sealed long before Sky's countdown reached fever pitch.[LNB]As is often the case at this time of year, the last day of the January sales were a bit of a let down.
