Everton have admitted they were surprised when Andrew Johnson was declared unfit to play for England against Spain in midweek.

The former Crystal Palace striker was withdrawn from the England squad on Monday because of an ankle injury, even though he had played in last weekend's Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Everton's assistant manager Alan Irvine confirmed: "Andy didn't pull out of the squad, he wanted to play.

"He went along and told them that he was sore and couldn't train for a couple of days, but that he would be ready for the match against Spain.

"But they told him that if he couldn't train then maybe it would be better if he went back to his club for treatment.

"Obviously, we were really happy here about that, and not because we're Scotsmen! But maybe England could have used him."
