Mane handed Espanyol task

Espanyol have wasted little time in appointing a new coach after turning to Jose Manuel Esnal "Mane" less than 24 hours after parting company with Bartolome Marquez.

Mane, 58, has been handed a contract until the end of the season and has been charged with moving the Barcelona-based club away from the foot of the La Liga table.

Marquez was fired after Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Sporting Gijon left the club facing a relegation battle.

"I am here because there has been a fall in results and to try and halt the slide," said former Lleida, Mallorca, Alaves Levante and Athletic Bilbao coach Mane.

"Espanyol is one of the most historic clubs in Spanish football."
