Young comes in for Cole
14 Oct 2007 - 18:50:35
Middlesbrough defender Luke Young has been called into the England squad for Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia after it was confirmed that Ashley Cole will miss the match because of injury.
Cole had to be stretchered off the pitch with an ankle problem as England eased to a 3-0 victory against Estonia on Saturday.
After the game, England boss Steve McClaren admitted the chances of Cole featuring against Russia were slim, saying: "I think Ashley took a knock on his ankle blocking a shot.
"We're assessing it but it doesn't look good at the moment. We'll have to monitor it over the next couple of days."
Young has won seven caps for his country since making his debut in the friendly international against the USA in May 2005.
The 28-year-old has not featured in the England team since the friendly win against Argentina six months later.
Young has made eight appearances for Boro this season following his £2.5million summer switch from Charlton Athletic.
England captain John Terry remains a doubt for the midweek clash in Moscow because of the knee injury that forced him to miss the Estonia game.
