World Cup 2014 - 21 days to go: Players - Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge is the leading English goalscorer in the Premier League and barring injury is a certain starter when Hodgson names his World Cup team to face Italy. With 24 goals in 33 appearences this season the striker has been in sensational form for Liverpool, forming a great partnership with Luis Suarez and helping Liverpool finish second in the the Premier League.

Sturridge began his senior career at Manchester City, making 21 appearances, scoring 5 goals and being named Young Player of the Season before moving on to Chelsea in 2009 after his contract expired. Sturridge made 63 appearances for Chelsea over four seasons, whilst being used mostly as a wide player rather than a centre-forward he scored 13 goals and a further 8 while out on loan to Bolton but was often an unused substitute and in 2013 he made a life-changing move to Liverpool.

Sturridge, it can be fair to say hasn’t looked back, being used solely as a striker he has already scored more goals for Liverpool than he has for all of his previous clubs combined. In 2014 he was named in the PFA team of the year as well as being on the shortlist for Player of the Year and nominated for Young Player of the Year.

The twenty-four-year-old has represented England from U16-U21 and is now part of the senior setup, making 10 appearances and scoring 3 goals. Sturridge has now scored at every level of international football for England as well as for Great Britain at the Olympics.

England will need all of his pace, technique and goals if they are to succeed in Brazil against Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica.
