World Cup 2014 - 10 days to go: South Africa 2010

The 19th staging of the FIFA World Cup was the first to be hosted in Africa but beyond that was quite a flat affair that will be remembered more for the amazing culture and Vuvuzela plastic horn than its football.

Spain of course won their first World Cup in Johannesburg on the 11th July 2010 Having won by a 1-0 margin in every round from the Round of 16 to the final and setting a new lowest ever goals average of a World Cup winning team using the aimless and often tiresome Tiki-taka playing style. They will enter the 2014 World Cup with an ageing midfield but still as second favourites to win back-to-back European and World titles.

With the hosts going out in the group stages the atmosphere was largely flat in the later rounds with the Netherlands and Spain competing in an all European final which yielded just one goal after extra time and thus finally putting everyone out of their misery.

England put on one of their most lacklustre ever finals displays and were booed off the pitch by England fans with the then boss Capello claiming the players were too tired to perform, having played too many games for their clubs and not being in the best physical condition. A brilliant but disallowed goal from Frank Lampard was to be fair the only highlight for England and one of the few in the whole tournament. The disallowed goal helped bring about the successful introduction of the goal-line technology which FIFA had resisted.
